Lena Pernell-Tucker

< Back to the Team

Lena Monique Pernell-Tucker lives to create opportunities and to improve the quality of life for inner city youth in the city of Detroit. Lena was raised and a product of Detroit and Detroit Public Schools. She has witnessed the tremendous lack of resources and supports for the children in the city of Detroit.

Working with reDesign has helped her open her eyes to the failures of the educational system as well as having a young child. After graduating from Bowling Green State University, Lena took a job as a packaging designer with a global pet food manufacturer. After three years and feeling as though she was not making a direct impact on the world Lena founded Real Life. My Music. (RLMM). RLMM is a Detroit nonprofit that provides after-school programming for inner city youth, specifically in the areas of music, art and dance.

A Detroit native and the product of a single parent household, Lena is familiar with the importance that after school programming can have and wanted to be a part of the solution. As program manager, Lena works to ensure that all projects are completed in a timely manner and ensure that our work always meets the needs of our ultimate client, the youth. She is complimented the most for her passion and her ability to see the big picture. She is always seeking ways for organizations to grow and improve their mission and vision. She is most proud of her accomplishment of establishing her nonprofit serving the inner city youth of Detroit from voluntary to having paid staff members.

I GEEK OUT ABOUT…

#1 Our vast collection of activities available as resources for download on our website: http://www.redesignu.org/design-lab/learning-activities

SOMETHING I’M LEARNING ABOUT OUTSIDE OF WORK

#1 The genetic effects that trauma has on families through the generations. The impact that slavery can have on the present generation of African Americans and the impact the Holocaust has on the present-day Jewish population. The notion that trauma can be passed genetically through DNA.
