Learning Objective

Definition

A set of Learning Goals that outline what students will master with regards to skills and content. These are specific and concrete, but complex enough they they will require a number of Learning Targets to master. Learning progressions detail the Learning Objectives and Learning Targets that students must master over time.

Designer's Tips

In thinking about the design of a mastery learning system, Learning Targets are typically articulated late in the design process as they aren't essential to a launch. Over time, research-based Progressions will be more available, making this more of an adoption process than a design process. This collection of resources provides insight into the distinctions and relationship between Learning Progressions, Learning Targets and Learning Objectives. These terms are often used interchangeably, but actually describe critically different (and highly related) aspects of learning work students will undertake in a well-designed Mastery Learning System.

Tips for a Short Implementation Time-Line

With a short time-line we suggest yoou begin small: train teachers in what these are, and have them begin to map them once they have identified the Performance Tasks they will use.
Curated Resources: This collection of resources from the field includes models and exemplars, as well as “DIY” guidance to facilitate your exploration of this term.

Two sides of the Common Core: CBE and Student Learning Objectives

Description

This article explores the relationship between competencies and student learning objectives. It concludes that they are related but not the same. Recommendations include that 1) required competencies reflect a small set of the most critical ideas of a discipline (or across disciplines), 2) the student learning objective (SLO) system is designed so teachers are expected to be evaluated on multiple SLOs, and 3) there is a stronger overlap among the SLO learning goals and the required competencies.

NH DOE Grade Level Expectations

Description

The New Hampshire DOE, Rhode Island DOE, and Vermont DOE have developed a common set of grade-level expectations, known as the New England Common Assessment Program Grade-Level Expectations (NECAP GLEs), and test specifications in mathematics, reading, and writing. Between the NECAP GLEs and the Common Core Grade Level Expectations articulated by PARCC, designers at the beginning of this work may find it's more efficient to adopt and adapt, than it is to invent a new wheel!
