Leading the Way: Designing Competency-based Learning Systems

ABOUT THIS INSTITUTE
This Institute is designed specifically for individuals in a leadership position who are leading the design, development, and implementation of a competency-based education initiative at the school or system level. Drawing on exemplary models and lessons learned from the field, participants will engage in an intensive learning and design workshop on the "what" and "how" of building a coherent and customized competency-based learning system for your school, network, or district. Through this Institute, you will:
"Take inventory" through through an appreciative inquiry method; while exploring the distinctive features of a competency-based learning system, you'll begin to identify strengths to build upon in the short-term as you move toward a comprehensive, learner-centered, and rigorous competency-based model
Access and apply a rich set of field-tested design tools (frameworks, design guides, exemplars, and curated resources) with the support of seasoned educational designers; these tools can also be adapted to your contexts and used with your own teams and stakeholders to support your work moving forward
Develop a customized roadmap and staging plan for engaging your key stakeholders, designing and developing your competency-based learning system, and building the capacity of your team along the way
Get individualized support, feedback, and thought partnership through on-demand coaching sessions available throughout the Institute
Note that prep work activities will be provided, and strongly recommended, for participants so that we can optimize our time together. Design teams and/or leadership teams are encouraged to attend together.
You are strongly encouraged to register for Leading the Way Part 2 - Virtual Charrettes of this Institute as a way to receive ongoing support and feedback in the months that follow, as well as to benefit from structured opportunities to stay connected to professional peers across the country who are on a similar journey.
This Instititute is part of reDesign's spring and summer series of Competency-based Education (CBE) Institutes, which also includes: Competency-based Curriculum Design and Meeting Students Where They Are. Each Institute will model CBE best practice, with multiple entry points, on-demand small group mini-lessons and feedback support, one-on-one coaching, and self-pacing.

She is both visionary and pragmatic, with an incredible knack for making the complex actionable. You're in for a treat. Antonia is the co-author of Making Mastery Work. She lives in Boston with her family.
Sydney Schaef, M.B.A., M.Ed., is a designer and consultant at reDesign. Sydney has 12+ years of experience, both domestic and international, as a teacher, school designer, and education nonprofit leader. She brings an organizational development lens, a knack for visual thinking, and lots of positive energy to the work. Sydney is the author of Five Key Lessons in Mastery Learning Startup. She lives in Lancaster, PA with her family.
