reDesign is a nationally recognized design and coaching shop. Though our National office is in New England, we are committed to working with you on your home turf, as a way to support local economies, build local capacity, and remain affordable to our partners. As we work on larger projects and initiatives, we maintain contact through site visits and virtual meetings, while recruiting and training a local team, hand-picked to serve your needs.
Asia Society's nationally recognized International Study Schools Network is deeply committed to preparing students to understand the world we live in, the critical global issues facing current and future generations, and the diversity of cultures and experiences to be found around the planet. We teamed-up with AS to develop a set of 6 online professional development modules that would support teachers as they deepen their own global competence, and build their capacity to design interdisciplinary units with embedded performance assessments.
Cleveland Public Schools are in the midst of a transformation. The district has created a diverse portfolio of schools and is continually ramping up its efforts to ensure that students are prepared for postsecondary education and careers. In 2014, the district launched three new mastery learning schools: High School for Digital Arts, Eagle Academy, PACT High School. As part of this initiative they invited us to facilitate a series of meetings to introduce district and school personnel to the building blocks of mastery learning.
One of the many ways that College Success Foundation supports Washington DC youth is through their intensive summer school program. They approached us to design a reading intensive social justice module, but money was tight. In order to stretch the budget, we began by working with existing Civil Rights materials developed by Facing History and Ourselves, embedding close reading activities from our Design Lab, and creating a new culminating project.
The Dalio Foundation is a major supporter of education initiatives in the mid-Atlantic region. They engaged us to undertake a deep dive study at one of the Connecticut schools they have funded. Our approach to academic reviews is to open a conversation witht the school, to take time to understand the commitments and vision of the stakeholders, and to use a supportive analytic eye to identify issues and practices that might be standing in the way of achieving the mission. Over several days, we undertook interviews with the leadership, facilitated focus groups with teachers, students and parents, observed classrooms and other aspects of school life, analyzed achievement data, and studied instructional leadership routines and practices.
Supporting Academic Growth in Detroit Charter Schools
Detroit has an ever-growing charter school community, with limited funds to support capacity-building efforts. The Department of Education engaged us to facilitate a Workshop on our Framework for Effective Instruction for the charter schools in its portfolio. At the Office's request, the workshop was designed to introduce participants to a set of hands-on, skills and learning activities they could immediately begin to use in their classrooms.
Integrating the Common Core Standards with Youth Development Efforts
East Side House Settlement provides youth development support to a number New York City High Schools, in addition to an array of adult education and social services program. Several of the high schools that partner with East Side are also long time reDesign clients: Bronx Design & Construction Academy, Bronx Haven High School, High School for Excellence & Innovation, and Mott Haven. As we jointly served these schools our mutual respect grew, and we hatched a plan to develop and facilitate a set of workshops and tools to support school-embedded youth advocates in integrating the Common Core Standards into the social-emotional development work they undertake with students.
School Design and Leadership Coaching at the Y's Detroit Leadership Acaemy
DLA is part of a small network of charter schools started by Detroit's YMCA. We initially worked with the school founder to design the school model. Later, we supported the Principal in expanding her Instructional Leadership skills, providing her with tools and practices that would allow her to take a strengths-based approach to supporting teachers in learning effective strategies for supporting adolescents with significant gaps in skills and knowledge.
