A Practitioner's Guide to Competency-Based Learning

In 2017, CompetencyWorks and the International Association for K–12 Online Learning (iNACOL) commissioned reDesign to write one of several papers to begin addressing trending issues in the expanding field of competency-based education. Meeting Students Where They Are is a text that brings clarity to the pedagogical, structural, and cultural aspects of creating a learning environment in which all students are known and supported on their journey toward post-secondary readiness. Meeting all students where they are is a commitment that requires that we reconfigure our old systems and practices and paradigms; that we place the individual learner at the center of the learning process; and that the learning process - what actually happens cognitively, neurologically, and developmentally as children learn - be placed at the center of the pedagogical model.
